Pittsfield Drug and Alcohol Committee
Minutes of 9/24/07 Meeting
Attending: Pittsfield Police Chief Robert Wharem (RW), Gary Colby (GC); Pittsfield
Selectman Larry Konopka (LK); Larry Berube (LB), Denise Morin(DM );
Guests: Jim Maestranzi (JM), Dan Schroth (DS), Donna Stewart, Matt Hanson, Tom
Hitchcock
Meeting called to order at 7:03 PM
Minutes from the last meeting were read and a motion was made by GC to accept. LK
seconded and the minutes were accepted.
Jim Maestranzi, would like to be appointed to the board representing the Pittsfield Youth
workshop.
Dan Schroth – would really like to pursue with Diversion some form of Pittsfield
Investment, Co.
Tom Hitchcock – stated that he believes that Dan’s idea has some merit.
Larry Berube – brought up the idea of instituting mandatory background checks for
landlords on new renters prior to renting to them.
Tom Hitchcock knows resources for those who wish to turn their lives around and get off
drugs.
GC gave an overview if what we can do in the Schools;
– D.A.R.E.
– Stranger Danger
– Science classes
– Health Safety
– Fire Prevention
– Early Childhood,
Gary Colby talked about Magnets for Refrigerator outlining important information.
Bob Wharem spoke about getting some Partnerships in place that may help convey
messages and ideas to people.
Guest Speakers were possible attraction getters
Larry Konopka – write down what is offered within the community for programs and also
possibly with state numbers.

Matt Hanson – Questioned what D.A.R.E.’s approach to helping kids were
Old Business- A brief about law enforcement and crime related activity.
Gary Colby – resource list of available help numbers for schools to have
and hand out.
Larry Konopka – expressed good response to the police log in the
newspapers.
Dan Scroth – expressed that the walking patrols really work well.
Larry Konopka – wondered about the possibility of renting a drug dog and
Larry Berube suggested putting a drug dog into the budget in the form of a
warrant article for town meeting. Also gave input on the possibility of a
brochure about the warning signs of drug use.
It was a general consensus that publicizing this committee would be a good idea.
Larry Konopka – motioned to adjourn the meeting, GC seconded, all in favor.
Meeting Adjourned at 8:25 PM
Next meeting is scheduled for October 8, 2007 7:00 P.M. Columbus Day?
